Green Cedar Lebanon expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Mona El Khalil, a remarkable environmental advocate whose life became synonymous with the protection of Lebanon’s sea turtles and coastal ecosystems.
For decades, Mona devoted herself tirelessly to safeguarding the endangered sea turtles that nest along the shores of Tyre and Mansouri. Through her dedication, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to conservation, she transformed a stretch of Lebanon’s coastline into a sanctuary for one of the Mediterranean’s most vulnerable species. Her work extended far beyond protecting nests and hatchlings; she inspired generations of environmentalists, volunteers, researchers, and local community members to become stewards of nature.
Known affectionately as the “Guardian of the Sea Turtles,” Mona was a powerful voice for environmental protection and sustainable coexistence between people and nature. She understood that conserving biodiversity requires not only scientific knowledge but also deep compassion, community engagement, and relentless determination. These qualities defined her life’s work and earned her the admiration and respect of colleagues and friends across Lebanon and around the world.
Mona’s legacy is visible in every sea turtle that safely returns to Lebanon’s shores, in every young person inspired to protect nature, and in every conservation effort strengthened by her example. Her contributions have left an enduring imprint on Lebanon’s environmental movement and on the collective effort to preserve the country’s natural heritage for future generations.
Today, Green Cedar Lebanon joins environmental organizations, conservationists, and countless admirers in mourning the loss of an extraordinary woman. While her passing leaves a profound void, her vision and achievements will continue to guide and inspire those who carry forward the mission she embraced with such passion.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
May Mona El Khalil rest in peace, knowing that the sea turtles she dedicated her life to protecting will forever stand as a living testament to her legacy.
